The Road to Perdition (2002)

 Jack's Rating :

In the world of noir the protagonist usually makes a mistake because of some weakness and his world comes crashing down on him. The protagonist is usually confused and uncertain, wondering how he got himself in to such a bad situation.

The movie is a period piece set in 1931. Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) is not a weak person and he is also not someone who makes mistakes. But his son did, sneaking in the back of the car and witnessing a killing by his father's boss' son, Connor Rooney. When Connor Rooney decides to kill the witness, the Sullivan's world begins to fall apart.

The movie then moves in to revenge mode and we have the super-hero like avenger getting even. There aren't too many twists and turns like the classical noir, but there are a few.

The film is more noir in it's style than in it's plot. It's based on a graphic novel and it won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Paul Newman was also nominated as Best Supporting Actor for his role as crime boss John Rooney. The movie is dark and at times it looks like it was filmed in black and white. Water is used throughout to signify death. The hit man (Jude Law) likes to take pictures of his victims.

The boss' son is weak, and his adapted son is strong. In the end almost everyone dies.

Maybe more noir in style than in content, I'm including it because I thought it was really good.

Quotes:

Michael Sullivan: He murdered Annie and Peter!
John Rooney: There are only murderers in this room! Michael! Open your eyes! This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven.
Michael Sullivan: Michael could.
John Rooney: Then do everything that you can to see that that happens.

Michael Sullivan: I'd like to work for you.
Frank Nitti: [Chuckles] Well... that's very interesting.
Michael Sullivan: And in return, I'd like you to turn a blind eye to... what I have to do.
Frank Nitti: And what is that?
Michael Sullivan: Kill the man who murdered my family.

[Sullivan has a gun to Kelly's head]
Jack Kelly: Think, Mike. Don't be stupid. I'm just the messenger.
Michael Sullivan: [lowers his gun] Then give Mr. Rooney a message for me.
Jack Kelly: What is it?
[Sullivan shoots him]
