Jack's Rating :

The Coen brothers first movies is a film noir, which is just about as good as you can get. Just when you think you have the movie figured out it twists again.

The doomed protagonist is Ray, who is just as confused as the audience. He starts going out with his boss Marty''s wife, Abby (Frances McDormand). Then Marty hires a detective, Loren Visser to follow her. Visser gets pictures of Ray and Abby.

Then Marty hires Visser to kill the couple. But Visser tricks up Marty, and kills him instead, taking his money and framing Abby.

Then Ray comes upon Marty's dead body, and thinks Abby did it (her gun was left there by Visser). He tries to cover it up, and brings Marty out to the desert to bury him. But Marty isn't dead so Ray buries him alive.

When Ray tells Abby that he covered it up, she has no idea what he is talking about.

Then Visser comes back for his lighter and shoots and kills Ray. He tries to shoot Abby but misses. Abby puts a knife through his hand when he reaches in the window. The whole time Abby thought it was Marty, but it was Visser she finally shoots and kills.

All of that in 99 minutes.

Great movie with a great cast. Neo-noir at it's best.

Quotes:

Ray: If you point a gun at someone, you'd better make sure you shoot him, and if you shoot him you'd better make sure he's dead, because if he isn't then he's gonna get up and try to kill you.

Abby: [after shooting Visser] I'm not afraid o' you, Marty.
Private Detective Visser:  Well, ma'am, if I see him, I'll sure give him the message.

Marty: I got a job for you.
Private Detective Visser: Uh, well, if the pay's right, and it's legal, I'll do it.
Marty: It's not strictly legal.
Private Detective Visser: Well, if the pay's right, I'll do it.

Marty: Count it, and go.
Private Detective Visser: Naw, I trust you.
