Frank (James Caan) had dreams, like most noir protagonists. Just one more score and he was going to settle down with a wife and the house, and leave his old lifestyle behind. Frank owns a bar and a car dealership, but he feels he just needs a little more to get him to the point where he needs to be. That is Frank's fatal flaw.

Frank is a skilled jewelry thief and he does a job where he moves the jewels to a fence, in return for $185,000. Before he can get paid his fence gets knocked off. Frank goes to collect his money from some gangster, but the boss hooks him in to one last score. The boss even buys an infant for Frank and his girlfriend.

The job goes well, but when it is over the boss won't give Frank all of the money he has coming. He "invests' some of it for him. Franks gives the boss 24 hours to get his money. The next thing you know Frank's best friend is dead and Frank is beaten up and has his new family threatened.

Frank gives his girlfriend some money and tells her to take the money and leave. Frank then blows up his bar, his house and his car lot. He then goes after the boss.

After a shoot out at the boss' house, Frank walks away, the last one standing.
