Lilly (Houston) is a veteran con woman who works for a bookmaker. She goes to racetracks and places bets to make sure the odds aren't too big on any horse.
On the way to a job she stops in to see her son Roy (Cusack), who she hasn't seen in years. She finds him in the hospital, bleeding internally. Roy had been hit in the stomach with a bat while making a small time grift. Lilly meets Roy's Myra (Bening), and doesn't like her. Lilly misses making a bet and her boss, Bobo, knocks her around.
When Myra finds out Roy is a grifter too, she tries to get him involved in a long-term con. Roy is hesitant. In the world grifters you can't trust anyone - even your girlfriend and your mother.
Myra lets Bobo know that Lilly has been stealing from her and Lilly goes on the run. Myra comes sfter her to kill her, but Lilly ends up killing her. Roy comes home and finds Lilly taking his money. Lilly tells Roy she needs the money to start again. She even goes so far as to try to seduce him, telling him he is not really her son.
Lilly and Roy struggle, and Lilly swings a suitcase at her. A glass breaks, and cut an artery in his neck.
Lilly then heads out crying, with the money, while her son lies dying on the floor.
