The Detective (1968)

Frank Sinatra plays Detective Joe Leland. Joe investigated the murder of a homosexual man. It seems like an open and shut case when Joe catches the culprit, and after Joe gets the confession the culprit gets the electric chair.
On top of all the things going on in work, Joe's wife Karen is a nymphomaniac who can't help herself from going out with other men.
The department is corrupt, and half the guys are on the take. A woman asks Joe to investigate her husband's death. It has been ruled a suicide, but she doesn't believe it. When Joe investigates he finds out the husband, William, was a bi-sexual. He then finds out that William was the one who killed the homosexual man, They had executed the wrong man.
Joe knows there are questions some powerful people don't want asked, but he pushes the envelope anyways and then hands in his badge.
A very daring and different movie, particularly for 1968. But what was edgy for 1968, homosexuals and bi-sexuals is not edgy or disturbing today. But still interesting to see the way gay people were treated and perceived in 1968.

Quotes:

I spent twenty years living for the department, now I'm going to start living for myself.
